SAGE Student Advocacy Workshop

This training is specifically for students in grades 6th-12th who either have an IEP or 504 plan and can advocate for themselves.  The intent of this workshop is to teach children to self-advocate.

Self-advocacy is learning how to speak up for yourself, making your own decision about your life, learning how to get information to help you and finding out who will support you. The goal for Wylie ISD is to have students attend their 504/IEP meetings and this training will help prepare the students.

WHEN:  November 30, 2017 @ 6:30pm

WHERE:  Educational Service Center, 951 S Ballard Street, Wylie, TX  75098

Rise. and shine.

The district’s theme for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year is “SHINE – Lighting Pathways for Students.” I absolutely love a good theme, because I love being able to put even more meaning and focus on what we are doing and the goals we are setting. Our Council theme this year, and the theme we’d love for each of your boards to get behind is

and shine.
and PTA
the Wylie Way.

A couple months ago, my amazing friend Krysta (as I was stressing about our Council shirt) sent me a link to a blog by Becky Higgins, entitled “Rise and Shine”. The moment I read this blog, I felt it would be perfect for our Council board, our local boards, and our volunteers and that it would go hand-in-hand with the district’s theme and emphasis this year.

You’ll notice the period after rise. It makes a statement. Rise is a call to action. How many mornings do we wake up already tired before the day even starts? (Guys, for me, it’s like all of them … lol!) … with volunteering, church responsibilities, 4 kids, sports, activities, house cleaning, chauffeuring, lunch making, laundry – the list can go on and on and on – I usually find myself in a pretty consistent state of tired. At times, it can all seem a little overwhelming. I find though that on the days I feel overwhelmed, it is usually because I have lost sight of my purpose and the reason why I do the things I do. RISE. is a reminder to me this year to wake each morning with purpose and intent. RISE. is a reminder to me this year to wake each morning and give each day the best I have. RISE. is a reminder to me this year to wake each morning realizing that one person can make a difference.

No matter whether you’re new to PTA, new to a school, or done this before, there will be days that you feel tired. There will be days that try your patience. There will be days that you feel overwhelmed. It’s in these moments that I hope you remember the word RISE. Remember that you can make a difference. Remember that what you are doing is important. We’re not just a group of people that can’t get enough of fundraising and baking and spirit wear … We are a group of giving and capable individuals that has decided it is important to advocate for every, single child. We are a group of giving and capable individuals that has decided we can make a difference.

RISE. and remember the TXPTA mission statement – our mission statement – “To make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.” That is the power you have – to help make every child’s potential a reality.

and shine.

There are so many different forms of light, and they each hold their own uniqueness and beauty. I love seeing fireflies at night … I love their little spurts of light that may be off in the distance or may be right in front of my face. I love fireworks, especially fireworks over Cinderella’s castle … I love how they illuminate the entire sky in different colors and in different degrees of brightness. I love that I can flip a light switch and immediately a light comes on and makes things visible (and saves me from bumping my shin into something.) Many a camping trip has been saved by the light of a flashlight … and how I love the bright, warming light of the sun.

Just as there are so many different ways for light to shine – I’m sure we could all name quite a few more – there are many different ways in which we can SHINE, and there are many different ways in which we can help those around us SHINE. We, as a Council board, are here to help you SHINE. We are here to support you and help you. We are really looking forward to seeing all the ways you SHINE this year and to seeing all the ways our local PTAs SHINE. We’re looking forward to seeing the ways PTA helps each student SHINE this year.

and PTA
the Wylie Way.

There’s something pretty special about our town, about our community, about our school district – it’s referred to as “The Wylie Way.” It’s a movement, and it’s one I’m proud to be a part of. I hope we will always PTA the Wylie Way – volunteer, mentor, and serve with each and every student in mind.

The Council board is looking forward to supporting you this year – please reach out to us with any questions, concerns, and needs you may have. We are looking forward to celebrating you this year. We are looking forward to working with you this year in helping potential become reality.

Thank you for all you do and for all the time you give! You make a difference.
